UNIVERSITY SEAL & COLORS

The seal is the official symbol of the University.

As described in the University’s Articles of Incorporation the original seal shown in Figure 1 is a circular shield inside which is inscribed the philosophy of the University of the Visayas: Amor Servitium Humanitas (Love and Service to Humanity) and the year 1919, the year of its founding. At the center of the seal is the shrine of the Magellan’s cross, typifying the Christian ideals which inspired the founding of the University, against a background symbolic of Philippine communities to portray the leadership development areas which the University had envisioned to serve at the time of it’s founding.

An open book and a torch of knowledge represent the ideals of academic excellence, which the University aims to achieve. Bordering the circular shield are two circular lines in between which is the name, University of the Visayas and Cebu City, its main location.

The equal distance between the two circular lines signifies the equality of educational opportunities for all with proven competence regardless of socio-economic status, race or creed and the non-discriminatory policy of the University insofar as faculty and students are concerned. The outer circle is bordered by the University colors of green and white in a continuous series of rounded projections of green alternating with white.

UV HISTORY

The University of the Visayas was founded by the late Don Vicente Gullas in 1919 as the Visayan Institute (V.I) in Cebu City. Moving from one location to another, it was not until 1935 that Visayan Institute moved to its present site in Colon Street. The Second World War razed to the ground the physical facilities of V.I but undaunted by adversities, Don Vicente Gullas reopened classes in Argao, Cebu in 1946. A year after V.I returned to its main campus in Colon Street where its building now stands as historical landmarks of quality education.

In 1948, the Visayan Institute was conferred University status by the Bureau of Private Schools, the first to become University in Cebu. V.I was renamed as the University of the Visayas. The expansion of its baccalaureate and post graduate course offerings and of its physical facilities has been phenomenal from an initial enrolment of 37 high school students, V.I evolved into a University with an enrolment, which at one time in the 1980’s peaked at 28,000 students, distributed throughout its various campuses. The University’s Elementary Department was established in 1972, the night classes in 1981 up to 1985. Kindergarten class was opened in 1981. The Elementary and Secondary departments have gone a long way since its establishment. Now, it remains firm in its mission, true to its noble philosophy of Amor, Servitium, Humanitas. Being a laboratory school, it collaborates with the faculty of the College of Education in mentoring prospective teachers. Today, the University of the Visayas has grown into eight campuses in the following areas: Pardo, Mandaue, Toledo, Danao, Compostela, Main, Minglanilla and Banilad. With the integration of the ASEAN 2015 and the implementation of Republic Act 10533 known as Enhance Basic Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Departments were integrated into Basic Education Department in 2013. The University Basic Education Department is committed to provide an environment which nurtures quality instruction, research, linkages and community extension services.
